Dr Brash was born in New Zealand and educated in New Zealand and Australia. He has worked at the World Bank in Washington and in investment banking in New Zealand. He made his first visit to China in 1986 as CEO of the New Zealand Kiwifruit Authority, and at the age of 47 became the Governor of New Zealand’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. During almost 14 years in that position, he visited China many times, meeting with both leaders of the People’s Bank of China and the Government. In 2002, he was elected to the New Zealand Parliament, and shortly afterwards became Leader of the National Party. He left Parliament in 2007, and since that time has undertaken consulting roles in various parts of the world. He became chairman of the New Zealand subsidiary of ICBC when the bank was first established in New Zealand in 2013, and still holds that position.
